"Value differences between nations ... from centuries ago are still present today. For the next few hundred years at least, countries will remain culturally diverse." G. Hofstede & G.J. Hofstede

We provide cross-cultural coaching, training and consulting services. At Connect East, we believe in a personalized approach. Each organization and individual has its unique challenges. Our approach is to customize every program based on the client's specific needs.

How It Works

Step 1: Before the program begins, we conduct input sessions with key stakeholders. This helps us fully understand the challenges you face and the desired outcome of the program.

Step 2: Based on your immediate and long term challenges, we agree on the best program to address your needs.

Step 3: Evaluate the results of the program and measure them against your desired outcome and design continuous improvement.

Coaching

Coaching is a dynamic and interactive way to learn about the other cultures based on the challenges you face every day. Your understanding of the other culture progresses over time as we work together to help you put in use the new cultural insights in daily work. We coach all levels of the organization from executives, managers to individual contributors. Coaching sessions are conducted either in small groups or with individuals.

Example: A Chinese equipment manufacturer works closely with its U.S. client for several years developing the product specified by the U.S. company. The work teams involve subject matter experts from both countries and geographic locations. Cross-cultural coaching is implemented to help address the daily challenges the work group faces as a result of cultural differences. The result is higher productivity and faster time to market.

Training

Training is most effective for an overview and preparation for the cultural-related issues that you may be facing at work. You may be on assignment in another country for a specified period of time. You may be interacting sometimes with your counterparts in the other country. The training program can give you a jump start in developing the right mind set when dealing with the other culture. Training is often followed up by coaching depending on your needs.

Example: A U.S.-based global NGO deals extensively with China. It frequently sends experts to China for short to mid term assignments. Prior to their departure, cross-cultural training is conducted to prepare the assignees for their time in China. Additionally, follow-up training or coaching can be conducted at three month, six month and one year intervals to ensure a smooth transition. The result is reduced stress caused by culture shock and better overall performance.

Consulting

Consulting is the most involved form. Through consulting, we can share our specific knowledge about certain industries, countries and functional areas (such as product development, negotiations and managing cross-cultural teams). We will help you implement detailed tasks towards your goal.

Example: A U.S. company and its Chinese vendor are entering into a new relationship. They are negotiating the contract terms and find it hard to come to an agreement. Possibly, this is caused by the cultural differences and the different negotiating styles from the two countries. Connect East acts as a third party mediator to bridge the differences and help bring the partnership to the next level.
